LOTTERY ESTABLISHES WORKFORCE HOUSING WAITIST!
On Wednesday Mammoth Lakes Housing, Inc. (MLH) conducted the first workforce housing lottery, in which eligible applicants were randomly drawn for positions on the Mammoth Lakes Community-wide Workforce Housing Waiting List. Mammoth Town Councilman and President of the MLH Board Kirk Stapp drew the first lottery ticket and local resident Dan Molnar was ecstatic. “Its unbelievable!” Dan exclaimed. “I can’t believe I’ll be able to buy a place in Mammoth, let alone the next affordable one built in town.”
Dan Molnar has been living and working in the region for the past eight years, moving to Mammoth after graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. Dan is currently a chef at Skadi and caters dinner parties and small events on the side. “Dan is just the type of person we’re here to help,” stated MLH Executive director Andrea Clark. “He’s very fortunate to be first on the Waitlist, as he’ll have first choice of the town homes and condominiums MLH is currently constructing.”
Dan has indicated that he plans to hold out for a two-bedroom town home in the Aspen Village at Mammoth Creek development next to Snowcreek Athletic Club. “It’s unbelievable that I get to live on the creek!” Dan exclaimed.
The Lottery served as an open and equitable process of establishing a housing waiting list for those members of the Mammoth Lakes workforce looking to rent or buy an affordable home. With the list now established, workforce housing units will be offered to people on the list based on household income and household size. “Although there is no guarantee, it is likely that the one hundred fourteen (114) households who were in the lottery will be offered a home to rent or buy in the next two years,” stated Clark. “And, we’re thrilled by that prospect!”
Currently there are eighty (80) households on the purchase waiting list and fifty-four (54) households on the rental waiting list. MLH is continuing to accept applications and will place households on the waiting list in the order they are received. If you have worked in Mammoth Lakes for at least one year and have a gross household income of less than $150,000 per year, you may be eligible to rent or buy a workforce housing unit.
